Dr McNeil is a consultant haematologist that works in the NHS and at Kings Park Hospital


He trained in the UK and is on the GMC Specialist Register (6148133)


He is a member of the British Society for Haematology and the European Hematology Association

Training

Dr McNeil graduated MBChB in 2006 from the University of Glasgow. During his undergraduate training he also did a 2 year intercalated BSc (Hons) degree in Immunology in 2004. He won an Otago scholarship to study in Dunedin, New Zealand in 2005.


He completed Foundation training then Core Medical Training in the West of Scotland between 2006-2010 and passed the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) exam in 2010. At this early stage he developed a passion for Haematology having worked in the specialty at Gartnavel General Hospital and the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.


In 2010 he started higher specialist training in Haematology in the West of Scotland gaining experience  in laboratory and clinical aspects of the specialty in both city teaching hospitals and district general hospitals. He passed the Fellowship examination of the Royal College of Pathologists UK (FRCPath)  in 2014.

Clinical Experience

In 2015 he was appointed as a consultant haematologist at St John's Hospital in Livingston. He led the department in a multidisciplinary project for expansion of the outpatient chemotherapy ward which became the Edinburgh Cancer Centre @ St John's. He contributed to undergraduate teaching and developed an interest in clinical management. He was elevated to Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCP Edin) in view of his clinical excellence.


In 2020 he moved to be a consultant haematologist at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert where his clinical practice encompasses inpatient, outpatient and laboratory haematology. He supervises an undergraduate teaching module in haematology for Glasgow University medical students and is an educational supervisor for junior doctors. In recognition of his academic contribution to teaching he was appointed as an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow.


Dr McNeil has a research interest in ITP and myeloma and is a principal investigator for clinical trials in these areas at Forth Valley. He was appointed Clinical Director for the diagnostic specialties at Forth Valley in 2023.


As a consultant haematologist, Dr McNeil has experience in diagnosing and managing a wide range of blood disorders including:

  • Anaemia
  • Disorders of White Blood Cells and Platelets
  • General Haematology problems
  • Haemato-Oncology blood cancers
  • Investigation of Lymphadenopathy or Splenomegaly
  • Haemostasis and thrombosis problems including bleeding tendency assessment and providing anticoagulation advice


His clinic at Kings Park Hospital has a focus on providing outpatient assessment,  clinical opinions and consultant follow up where necessary. He provides good continuity of care. Whilst it is not possible to have chemotherapy at Kings Park Hospital he is happy to discuss the options available to patients for their care directly with them in clinic.
